Penile Pumps.

Penile pumps are devices created for use by men who suffered from erectile dysfunction. They aim to help achieve a man get an erection, and by using a penile ring, maintain that erection until sexual desire is satisfied.

How Do They Work?

Essentially a penile pump is a mechanical device that acts as a vacuum, drawing blood into the penis allowing for an erection to be produced. The blood is then prohibited from leaving the penis by application of a ring at the base of the penis that can remain in place until intercourse has ended. They are usually made fro man acrylic material and often include a dome or cylindrical shaped body that fits over the penis which is attached to a hand pump or electrical device that applies the vacuum.

Are They Safe?

They are considered to be safe, as long as the man remembers to remove the ring from the base of the penis allowing blood flow to return to normal. It has been reported that the erect penis may feel slightly cold and less sensitive due to the constriction around the base, but with use, the user will grow used to this. Excessive use is not recommended as tissue damage might occur causing further complications and discomfort. Some experts believe that those men who have lost the ability to gain or sustain an erection due to surgical complications, may be able to restore natural ability following the use of a pump for a short time.

Many men use pumps in order to achieve a larger penis, though they were not designed for this use. Any effects of gaining a larger penis will be temporary. Often when used for this function the penis may extend in length but may be reduced in girth. Most women would prefer a wider girth rather than added length. It is not recommended to use these pumps in those who do not suffer from erectile dysfunction. For added safety, always make sure the instructions are followed precisely and that the pressure applied to the penis does not exceed the stated amount as blood vessels could rupture which can lead to quite serious effects on health.

Where Can They Be Purchased?

Any issues surrounding erectile dysfunction should be discussed with your GP who may be able to determine the cause or make referrals to specialists as necessary. Approved penile pumps can be recommended by specialists but it is not legally necessary to need a prescription. They can be bought in many sex shops, catalogues or off the internet though prices, types and success of different models is extremely variable.

What Are The Alternatives?

Alternatives to using penile pumps include the use of drugs such as Viagra which aim to help initiate an erection and help maintain it for longer. Obviously some men who have decided to try a penile pump, will have tried these types of drugs to no avail.

Penile pumps are pieces of equipment designed for use by those who experience erectile dysfunction. They aim to stimulate an erection by drawing blood into the penis using a vacuum which is then prevented from leaving the penis by applying a ring to the base of the penis whilst intercourse is achieved. Their use by others is not recommended.
